This latest publication provides a roadmap of current knowledge including in-the-field testimonials and addressing important gaps to kickstart action. We aim to bring you a holistic view of nutrient profiling, within the context of low-and-middle-income countries.
The findings are clear: current systems are not suitable for low-and-middle-income countries with complex nutritional challenges. However, elevating key priorities like developing consumer insights, supporting small and medium enterprises, and seizing opportunities for scale-up, can play a critical role in increasing the effectiveness of nutrient profiling in low-and-middle-income countries, for better nutrition and an energized tomorrow. Chibuike Emmanuel is the founder of Agserver, a digital platform delivering information and hosting peer-to-peer knowledge transfer for farmers in Nigeria. Using machine learning and artificial intelligence, farmers queries can be resolved in local languages and in real time without needing internet connection. Each farmers will be connected to the most suited and precise responder and resources proving information that allows the farmers to buy smarter (accessing quality products), and thereby produce better quality products.

Insight on Nutrient Profiling with Breda Gavin-Smith, Sight and Life nutritionist

Not only are food systems complex, but each is also unique to the geography and culture it is supposed to nourish. Building Healthy, Nutritious and Affordable Food Systems for Rwanda through Innovations is a workshop that looked to discover the intricacies and needs to build effective and efficient food systems in Rwanda. We aspire to develop a Food Systems Innovation Hub that will support a positive food system transformation. As a UN Food Systems Summit Independent Dialogue, the ideas and information from this workshop contributed to the upcoming Summit and further developed the Food Systems Innovation Hub concept in Rwanda. The event was moderated by Simon Winter of the Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture and featured: Presentations by Anna Lartey (University of Ghana), Dr Ndabamenye Telesphore (Technical Advisor, Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources – Rwanda), and Breda Gavin-Smith (Sight and Life). A dynamic conversation was led by Kalpana Beesabathuni (Sight and Life) with Namukolo Covic (IFPRI) and more on the importance of innovating affordable, tasty, nutritious foods and how the Food Systems Innovation Hub could support entrepreneurs. Maya Stewart (Lenzie Milling Company)along with Sight and Life team members hosted insightful breakout sessions on entrepreneurship and innovation, creating demand for nutritious foods, food safety, and advocacy and policy, and more.

Food Systems Innovation Hub Workshop

At Sight and Life, we are launching a new initiative – Food Systems Innovation Hubs. We are working to establish hubs in rapidly emerging consumer markets, such as India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Kenya to stimulate investment in resilient and responsive food systems, as well as facilitate relevant technology transfer and know-how from HIC to LMIC. Through partnerships, government collaboration, impact investors, and philanthropies in the context of local entrepreneurs, these hubs will catalyze a transformative change for society-wide dietary shifts towards more efficient, healthier, and more environmentally friendly food systems.
